Introduction to a Wisconsin gal who likes a lot of things

Hello! My name is Daniella Peters, and I'm a senior double-majoring in Spanish and Professional Writing, which is a fiction writing program in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. I'm set to graduate in May—kind of terrifying—but thanks to my 3.5 years of working at the OU Daily as a copy editor and now the copy chief, I have an internship lined up in Philadelphia this summer, and I can't wait to see where my career will take me next. Though I love working in journalism and find it extremely important to inform our communities and hold leaders accountable, my dream is to someday work in the publishing industry as well, specifically in the YA fiction market. In fact, I've even written YA fiction myself, and I have one short story self-published on Amazon. It's called "Brunch Boy," and I'd love for you to check it out!

As I mentioned in the title of this post, I'm from Wisconsin, and I consider that a huge part of my identity and the things I love to do (and eat). Of course, I love cheese—nothing beats cheddar cheese curds or Brie on baguette slices. Since I live in the Milwaukee area when I go home on breaks, I often spend my summers with friends at several Lake Michigan beaches, and I love going to Summerfest every year and seeing some of my favorite bands in concert. Out of all the bands I've seen, I think my top three are COIN, Foster the People, and Young the Giant. However, my absolute favorite musical act in the world (besides Lorde) is Bastille, and believe it or not, I've never seen them in concert. They were in Milwaukee for Summerfest one year when I was in high school, but that was back when I was a competitive swimmer, and I had a big swim meet I couldn't miss that weekend. To this day, I'm still sad I missed my chance to see them, but I'll go to a concert of theirs someday. I'll make it happen.

After graduation, I'm not sure where I'll go, since I love to travel and my dreams of working in publishing will probably take me to a city bigger than Milwaukee. But I'll always love southeastern Wisconsin, and I would definitely be interested in going back there if it worked out for my career.

As far as my other interests go, I love romance books and movies, as well as most Disney/Pixar movies. Some of my favorite movies lately were Moana and Coco—I even wrote a ten-page analytical paper on Moana for my Intro to Mass Comm class in Gaylord when I was a freshman. I also enjoy playing the piano in my free time, and I've dabbled in playing the guitar (but I'm self-taught, so my skills are mediocre at best). Finally, I love learning new languages and exploring the etymology of words. My mom is from Mexico, so Spanish has always come semi-naturally to me, and my knowledge of a Romance language was a good base for me to learn French, too, in high school. Now, French is my minor, and I listen to songs in Spanish and French every once in a while to keep my listening skills fresh.

  1. Hi Daniella!

It's nice to meet you! I'm also a senior here at OU, but I'm majoring in mechanical engineering. I'm also getting ready to graduate this May and am excited to start working as an engineer for Michelin North America! It's nice to hear that your college experience from your coursework to your job at the OU Daily has prepared you for your internship in Philadelphia! I'm rooting for you to finish this semester strong and make the most of your career!
